History

One day, after returning from playing golf, Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State, and his neighbor Bill Bell, a successful businessman found their families sitting around doing absolutely nothing, complaining of “being bored to death”. Pritchard’s home was on Bainbridge Island, WA, and had an old badminton court. He and Bell looted some of their old badminton equipment but could not find a full set of rackets so they improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles
and a perforated plastic ball. Soon, they found that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface, and the 8 foot net was lowered to 36 inches. Another neighbor, Barney McCallum was also introduced to the game the following weekend, and the three men created a few easy-to-learn rules, relying heavily on badminton. They kept in mind the original purpose, which was to provide a game that the whole family could play together. The rest is just history.

Equipment

Playing pickleball only requires paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a court with a net. Players usually wear comfortable sports clothing and tennis shoes. That’s it. Depending on your location, Pickleball can have

both indoor and outdoor court facilities. Both are designed for plenty of play action. However, outdoor pickleballs are a bit harder, have a few more perforated holes on the ball surface and therefore faster. It’s a good idea to connect with your friends who play Pickleball, try out their equipment, and ask for their input on what to buy.
